So this one is really bugging me. You've all heard it before. Bass is too boomy. Looking for some advice on how to tame the beast. What else is needed? soundcloud.com/justind/play-it-slow

I've listened to this several times in the past week and the only thing that jumps out at me as needing any adjustments is to the lead vocals in the verse, which feel a little too low. Otherwise I have no suggestions whatsoever.

Just listened on my Ultrasone 900's. They don't let me get away with much down in the basement.
You might want to hit that bass with a little more HPF as well as a tiny mud cut (200-300). Maybe even a tiny complementary boost even...sweep up around 700 to 1K and see if it sparks a smile.

I wish I knew what the hell this means. I rationalise that ignorance is bliss everytime I read that sort of stuff.

I wish I knew what the hell this means. Smile. I use a High Pass Filter on every track. It is the lowest parameter on my EQ plugin. Your HPF filters out those pesky low frequencies. I also filter at the other end with a Low Pass Filter. My next favorite frequency for cutting is in the 200 to 400 range. Gentle broad cuts there on many tracks will keep the 'mud' from building up in the mix. Don't cut too much, though or things get thin sounding. After I get my bass sounding clean and clear I often like to 'point it up' a little by finding the place where a slight boost sounds good. So I sweep a bold boost up slowly through the frequency spectrum until something sounds good....then I bring that boost down to a more judicious level

I do my filtering manually for the most part. I do an EQ cut of all the lows, feeling for the appropriate place to start by ear. I tend to leave too much in early on, and have to go back as more things pile up.
I have a low/hi cut VST, but rarely use it because it is only knobs and doesn't show the curve it is cutting along. I've been searching for a free pass VST that shows the curve, but can't seem to find one.
What I still don't get at all is when people talk about the specific frequencies. I guess I need to pay more attention to the precise numbers on the EQ curve.

And....screen shot of a typical EQ setting on the final mix for a track that needed some taming in the mid-range.

I've listened to both versions (one is on Soundcloud and the other on Soundclick - does that come into it?). I've listened on cans and on speakers, and in both cases, the bass isn't sounding its best.
I don't know what you are doing, and I wouldn't understand the technicalities anyway, but compared to other music that I play on the same system, (say Floyd or Traffic or the like), your bass TONE is unusual. In the last version, there seems to be a bass guitar where the low frequencies have been removed, leaving a more mid-rangey sound. Sometimes gloopy in places.
But maybe I don't really know what I'm talking about other than it doesn't sound quite right yet.

Yep... listened to it in the car on the way to work today. It lacks... bite. Back to the drawing board on this one.
