My grab and go combo amp (and really my only amp) is a Fender Vibro Champ XD. I love it... it's only 5 watts, has a bunch of options and effects, and is a tube amp. Any guitar sound you hear on any of my recordings uses that amp. The Super Champ XD is similar, but 15 watts.
The Vibro Champ you can get for around $100 used.

A high quality lead vocal condernsor mic. A boutique 251 or 47 clone. Bock, Peluso, et al.
Or the JJ Audio $800 mod of my CAD Trion Tube 8000 mic. This mod effectively turns it into a Sony C-800g. A very expensive and frequently used pop/rock vocal mic. It retails for 10K! Streets for 7 or so... but the mod, well, Ronnie Spector's latest Christmas album uses it and it sound freaking great.
800 bucks starts to sound cheap. Anybody want to front me 800?

I want a Focusrite ISA 2.
At least, that's what I think I want... Really, I'm looking for a decent 2 channel preamp.

I don't know enough about what things do to know what I'm even missing. Something that offers condensor quality vocal recording without being -sensitive to background house sounds?

EV RE20 (I have one and Lee Knight uses one for all his vox) or a Shure SM7B. That said, I much prefer the sound of the large condenser on my voice. Either one you need a preamp that can boost a bit. At least, that's what all the Gearslutz guys say.

Yeah... that would be great. Care to lend me 3k? How about I trade you my Great River ME-1NV and a Voxformer VST straight up?

The FMR stuff has stopped being the Gearslutz flavor of the week, so I think the prices are coming down. That said, the Great River stuff has also stopped being the Gearslutz flavor of the month, so....

Directional, dynamic mic + good sounding preamp. I have a Shure Beta 58 that I barely use because the distinction between no audio input and too much is way too fine. Is that something a preamp could resolve? Is a Shure Beta 58 a decent dynamic mic? Any recs on what preamp to pick up?

Woah, if this is true, I'm just going to have to stand pat.
It takes about $500 to get a dual preamp (and about $300 for a single) that is definitely and noticeably better than the "average" preamps on audio interfaces and mixers.

Is that something a preamp could resolve? Probably. A more common problem is the distinction between no audio input and too little, but a good preamp should help. I haven't used one but the Shure 57/58 are fine mics. The Beta 58 is directionally supercardiod which should help with noise rejection. www.shure.com/americas/products/microphones/beta/beta-58a-vocal-microphoneThe Golden Age 73 seems to be the Gearslutz flavor of the week.

I'd probably have more success talking my wife into a $500 investment if I hadn't dumped $150 in the MP orchestra VST, or $1,200 into the kids' mouths in just the past month.
Your $350 suggestion might be workable, though...

GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) has a connotation of fantasy. I'm comfortable with the fact that I don't NEED any more gear.

^I need a couple of more decent pre channels. For adequately micing a Grand Piano and Leslie in stereo. The built-in pres in my Digi003 leave a lot to be desired. My Presonus Eureka is the best I've got.

'm comfortable with the fact that I don't NEED any more gear. Me too. Been thinking on this question, though. I have honestly been stable for a long time now (well, my studio has). There was a period of time 7 or 8 years ago when my business was thriving and I was buying anything that I thought I needed. Before long I had three of everything....all low to mid range stuff......and I found myself having to decide which piece to use all the time. So I started giving stuff away over there at the Gearslutz Free Stuff thread. Felt good to recycle like that and felt even better to have limited gear choices. These days I just need to turn things on, twist a few dials and play. Getting to that place is something to strive for.

BAM! Just like that, I got an unexpected award today at work for $1,000, after taxes. So what to do? That 2 channel preamp is in reach now... or should I do what's probably the right thing and put the money towards the organ.

(sorry , couldn't resist)
